The Canadian pianist Eve Egoyan – one of the most celebrated contemporary music specialists in Canada – has spent her life trying to move beyond the limitations of the piano. Some of the most acclaimed composers in the country, and the world, have written music for her. If you go to hear Egoyan perform, you’ve got to be up for anything: mixed media performance experiments, hour-long minimalist works that flirt with total silence, unfathomable and virtuosic barrages of notes, audio samples of Armenian folk music, bright lights, video screens, choreography, poetry, new colours, new sounds, and the piano doing stuff it isn’t supposed to do.
