“Pianist draws out intense, difficult beauty … Spanish composer Maria de Alvear
refuses the piano its history… in the hands of a committed interpreter such as
pianist Eve Egoyan … it becomes a pathway to the unconscious … The intensity of
Egoyan’s focus pulled the listener – like a camel through the eye of a needle – into a
claustrophobic inner world, holding us within a net of promise that evaporated only
as the final notes died away”. – Elissa Poole, The Globe and Mail, 1996

I am thrilled to be performing Maria de Alvear’s monumental diptych De Puro Amor and
En Amor Duro (“Out of Pure Love” and “In Difficult Love”) in Toronto again at its CD
launch on April 14. For me, this performance celebrates the meeting of our
creative spirits over twenty years ago when I performed the North American
première of this piece, her diptych, at the Music Gallery in 1996. Since then, Maria has
written the following pieces for me: two piano concertos (Clear Energy and Sky Music)
as well as the solo piano piece Asking, released on Mode Records (New York).
Maria recently received the National Music Award in composition from the King and
Queen of Spain. She invited me to join her at the award ceremony, honouring our work
together.

De Puro Amor and En Amor Duro are seminal works for solo piano. They are
written in loose proportional notation – pitches are selected by the composer
leaving exact durations, voicing, and pedalling open. The scores are maps which
both challenge and invite their interpreter into a new type of dialogue, allowing
room for the performer to adjust to the given acoustics of the performance space,
the piano, and the shared energy between performer and audience.

They are a tour de force blending composer, piano, pianist and audience into an
emotionally charged performance experience.

Presented by the Music Gallery with generous support from Yamaha Canada Music and the Goethe-Institut, Toronto.

I anticipate that these two days will be quite transformative as I enter and share
the unique and intimate sound worlds of each of these extraordinary composers. I have
had ongoing interpretative partnerships with each. I have also recorded
all the works to be performed over this piano-filled weekend (Simple Lines of Enquiry,
WU and Nocturnes and Chorales were written for and premiered by me).

Council for the Arts.
